Seligenthal Abbey
Seligenthal Monastery was founded in 1231 as the first Franciscan monastery north of the Alps by Count Heinrich von Sayn and his wife Mechthild von Landsberg in Siegburg-Seligenthal. In 1803, the monastery was dissolved as part of the secularization.
Origin+
Originally, the monastery was operated as the hermitage of St. Anne's Monastery. In 1255, with the help of further donations, St. Anthony's Church was consecrated as the monastery church. In 1627, the first documented record of a pilgrimage to Seligenthal is attested.
In 1647, the monastery was severely damaged by a fire.
The church of the former monastery is now used as a parish church.
Foundation+
On October 21, 1654, Minorites founded a small urban settlement in the hermitage. They received the building with the condition of establishing a second-class trivial school in Siegburg. The south wing of the monastery was then rebuilt. Likewise, a new rectory was built in 1660.
Rochus Chapel+
In 1709, an additional chapel was built. It was dedicated to Saint Rochus as a thank you for averting the Red Dysentery. Even today, pilgrimages still take place here on Rochus Day, August 16th. The other monastery buildings were built even later in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Modern Era+
After the dissolution of the monastery, the complex threatened to fall into disrepair. Thanks to the donation of a Siegburg citizen, the monastery church was converted into a parish church in 1834.
Today, the buildings house a restaurant and hotel. In 2007, Dr. Eva Becker founded a new foundation for the monastery complex under the trusteeship of the German Foundation for Monument Protection.
