Seligental Abbey

The former Seligental Monastery is located in Baden-Württemberg in the Neckar-Odenwald district between the villages of Schlierstadt and Zimmern, within the municipality of the city of Osterburken. It was founded in 1236 and dissolved in 1568. In the estate, which is now used for agriculture, remains of the former monastery complex have recently been conserved and preserved for posterity.

The former monastery was a Cistercian nunnery. According to a foundation charter dated November 25, 1236, the monastery was founded by Konrad von Dürn and his wife Mechthild von Lauffen for noble women. The first abbess was named Hildeburgis and was probably a daughter of the founder. The ecclesiastical responsibility for the monastery lay with the Diocese of Würzburg. The monastery church was consecrated to the Holy Mother of God in 1239.

The nuns in Seligental lived according to the rules of Saint Benedict of Nursia (Regula Benedicti) in the Cistercian form. After a turbulent period, the monastery was dissolved in 1568 after the death of the last abbess Amalia Schelmin von Bergen in 1561.

Attacks during the Peasants' War and the conversion of numerous noble families in the surrounding area to the Reformation contributed to the decline of the monastery. Attempts by the abbots of Ebrach and Salem to revive the convent in 1613 failed due to the resistance of the Archbishop of Mainz. In 1803, Seligental came to the Principality of Leiningen as part of the secularization.

The church, which served as a sheepfold and barn, burned down in 1928. Its early Gothic entrance portal is still used today as a garden gate. Only the sacristy, which was used as a chapel until 1848, is recognizable in its original dimensions with a ribbed vault, fresco remains, and a window in Romanesque forms.

Since 1934, Seligental has been predominantly privately owned and used for agriculture.
