The Segeberg Monastery was founded in 1134. It was established as an Augustinian canons' foundation and was dedicated to Saint Mary and, from 1137, also to John the Evangelist. Over the centuries, the foundation developed into an important religious center. In 1445, it joined the Windesheim Congregation, which brought about a reform of monastic life. The Reformation led to a gradual transformation of religious practices. In 1564, the monastery was finally secularized and thus dissolved.
