Kloster Schienen

The origins of Schienen Monastery date back to the early 9th century, when relics of Saints Genesius and Eugenius were transferred to St. Michael's Church on Schiener Berg. Around the year 900, a Benedictine monastery was founded at this site, attracting increased pilgrimage. In the 10th century, the abbey was converted into a provostry and placed under the control of Reichenau Abbey. Following a revival of the Marian pilgrimage after the Reformation and the Thirty Years' War, the monastery, which belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Konstanz, was dissolved in 1757.

Schienen Monastery is situated in the municipality of Konstanz in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on the Höri peninsula by Lake Constance.

The former monastery church, an early Romanesque basilica from the 11th century, now serves as a parish church and pilgrimage church. Its simple floor plan and division into three naves are characteristic. In the early 18th century, the church received Baroque furnishings, which were later replaced by Neo-Romanesque ones and restored in 1959 to reinstate the original 11th-century condition. A wooden roof turret from 1595 houses three bronze bells. The former convent building, constructed in 1574 and modified several times, now serves as the rectory.
