Schäftlarn Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Schäftlarn dates back to approximately 762, established by Waltrich, a Benedictine from Frankish nobility. In the 10th century, the abbey temporarily ceased to exist. Around 1140, the monastery was transferred to the Premonstratensian Order and developed into a significant landowner during the High and Late Middle Ages. The current monastic complex was constructed between 1702 and 1760, with the Baroque church being built from 1733 to 1740. As part of the secularization, the monastery was dissolved in 1803. After various uses, including a faience manufactory and a bathhouse, it was utilized by the English Ladies in 1845. In 1884, the monastery was revived as a Benedictine monastery, and a gymnasium was established. In 1910, it regained the status of an abbey. An armed conflict during the Bavarian Soviet Republic in 1919 also marked the history of the site.

Kloster Schäftlarn is located in the Isar Valley south of Munich in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 569 meters above sea level.

Today, the monastery houses a private gymnasium with a day school and boarding facilities. The monks are involved in forestry, operate a distillery, and a beekeeping operation, whose products are offered in a monastery shop. The monastery fulfills its cultural mission through the abbey library and by hosting the Schäftlarn Concerts. Furthermore, it serves as a starting point for the St. James Way Isar–Loisach–Leutascher Ache–Inn.
