Santuari de Sant Salvador
The Santuari de Sant Salvador monastery (Spanish: Santuario de San Salvador), founded in 1342, is located at an altitude of 509 meters on Puig de Sant Salvador mountain in the southeast of the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, near the town of Felanitx.
The origins of the San Salvador monastery can be traced back to 1348 and to King Pere IV of Aragon, who commissioned its construction. The original pilgrimage church was built on the 509-meter-high mountain of the same name after a plague wave. As this church could no longer cope with the flow of pilgrims, the current church was built in 1715. In 1885, the site was auctioned off by the town of Felanitx. Until 1992, the monastery was managed by monks; since 1992, it has been run by two Mallorcan families who operate a restaurant and rent out rooms here.
The Monastery from a Tourist Perspective+
The monastery is reached via a winding road that branches off the Felanitx - Portocolom road. The path offers many beautiful viewpoints, passing a small chapel, a large stone cross from 1957, and the Christ the King monument from 1934.
Although the monastery complex appears rather simple and has a fortress-like character, the monastery church is quite magnificent. The sculptor Pere Coronero decorated the baroque high altar from the 15th century, which stands in the main nave of the church. A replica of the Last Supper from the Puerta del Mirador of La Seu Cathedral in Palma and a 13th-century statue of Mary can be seen. Outside the building is a 37-meter-high tower on which a seven-meter-high statue of Christ stands.
The panoramic view over the entire island is worth mentioning. To the northwest, one can see the Serra de Tramuntana, the southeast with the island of Cabrera, and to the north as far as Pollença and Alcúdia. The twelve rooms available for rent were renovated in 2002.
In the antechamber of the monastery, six world champion jerseys are displayed, which Guillermo Timoner, originally from Felanitx, won between 1955 and 1965 in track cycling's motor-paced racing.
