Sankt Ulrich und Afra Abbey

The origins of the monastery date back to the late 8th century, with its foundation or existence recorded from 778/807. An existing collegiate church of St. Afra was converted into a Benedictine monastery between 1006 and 1012. In the 15th century, the monastery experienced a period of flourishing due to the Melk Reform, becoming one of the most important abbeys in Southern Germany. It achieved the status of a free Imperial Abbey in 1577. Dedicated to Saints Afra and Ulrich, the monastery was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization process. The abbey church became a city parish church in 1810.

The former Monastery of Saints Ulrich and Afra is situated in the city of Augsburg in Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 518 meters above sea level.

Following the monastery's dissolution, the buildings were utilized as a military hospital and barracks from 1805. Today, the conference hotel Sankt Ulrich of the Diocese of Augsburg stands on this site.
