Zisterzienserinnenkloster Plötzky

The origins of the convent of Sankt-Maria-auf-dem-Georgenberg trace back to around 1210 or 1230, though an exact founding charter has not been preserved. Its establishment was significantly supported by the Dukes of Saxony-Wittenberg. As a Cistercian convent, it played a role in spiritual life for centuries. Following the Reformation, the community was dissolved in 1538. The convent buildings subsequently fell into disrepair and were demolished; some of the stones were reused in construction work at Gommern Water Castle. The cloister buildings were dismantled starting in 1578, and the convent church stood until 1793. Today, only remnants of the eastern boundary wall and parts of a former farm building, built from quarry stone masonry, remain. Some elements of the choir stalls can be found in the Sankt-Pancratii Church in Elbenau and in the Sankt-Lukas Church in Ranies.

The convent was located in Plötzky, a village in the present-day federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

Today, only sparse remains of the former convent complex are visible, including parts of the eastern convent wall and ruins of a farm building made of quarry stone. The original use as a sacred building is no longer in place.
