Kloster Sankt Fidelis

Student dormitory, church (unused)

The former Monastery of Sankt Fidelis in Regensburg, Bavaria, is a remarkable architectural monument whose Neo-Baroque style significantly shapes the urban landscape. Originally founded as a Capuchin monastery, it bears witness to a rich history of religious presence and urban development.

History+

The Monastery of Sankt Fidelis was established in 1916, following the dissolution of the city's previous Capuchin monastery during the secularization of 1810. The buildings, including the attached church, were designed by Heinrich Hauberrisser in the Neo-Baroque style and completed in 1921. A boys' seminary was affiliated with the monastery but closed in 1972 due to declining demand. The buildings were subsequently made available for use by the neighboring Goethe-Gymnasium. After the last Franciscan friars departed in 1994, the former residential wing was converted into student accommodation. Extensive renovations of the church took place in 1976 and 1977. In 1991, the convent was dissolved, and the monastery officially closed, with the Sankt Fidelis church subsequently serving as a filial church for the Parish of Herz Marien. In autumn 2023, the liturgical use of the building was discontinued, and the final mass was celebrated in December of that year.
