Kloster Salmannshofen

Private property

The Salmannshofen Monastery, once a significant spiritual center, was located in Bavaria, Germany. Founded in the late 13th century, it was a convent of Franciscan Tertiaries and played a role in regional church history before its abandonment in the early 15th century.

History+

The origins of Salmannshofen Monastery date back to 1282, when it was re-established for the sisters of Hausen. These Franciscan Tertiaries received a fief in Salmannshofen from Count Ludwig von Öttingen. The monastery, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was initially under the spiritual guidance of the Barefoot Monks from Augsburg. In the 14th century, the convent benefited from various donations and endowments. However, a lack of new members and economic problems led to its decline. A fire around the turn of 1400/01, when only four nuns remained in the convent, sealed the monastery's fate. Subsequently, it became the property of Holzen Monastery until it was sold to the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter in 1753.
