Rottenbuch Abbey

The Canons Regular monastery of Rottenbuch was founded in 1073. Duke Welf I of Bavaria initiated its establishment at the suggestion of Bishop Altmann of Passau, who introduced the Rule of Saint Augustine for the new monastery. The monastery was consecrated in honor of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Nativity of Mary. Over the centuries, Rottenbuch developed into a significant center for the reform of canons in Old Bavaria and served as a mother monastery for other Augustinian Canons Regular foundations. Between 1750 and 1770, the monastic complex was extensively rebuilt before its dissolution in 1803 during the secularization. The former monastic buildings were subsequently sold and partially demolished. From 1963, the Don Bosco Sisters took over parts of the preserved complex and used them for social projects, which later transformed into a support center for intellectual development. Since 2010, the institution has been operated by the Regens-Wagner-Stiftung Dillingen.

The former monastery of Rottenbuch is situated in the municipality of Rottenbuch in the Weilheim-Schongau district of Bavaria, Germany. The complex lies at an elevation of approximately 765 meters above sea level.

The preserved buildings of the former Rottenbuch monastery now serve various purposes. One part houses the Rottenbuch town hall, another the local primary school and a village museum. The former collegiate church of the Nativity of Mary has been used as a parish church since the secularization in 1803. The social institutions for people with intellectual disabilities, initiated by the Don Bosco Sisters, are now continued by the Regens-Wagner-Stiftung Dillingen.
