Rosenthal Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Rosenthal took place in 1241 by Count Eberhard IV of Eberstein, lord of Stauf Castle, and his wife Adelheid of Sayn. The early Gothic church of the monastery, dedicated to the Mother of God Mary, was consecrated in 1261 by Bishop Raugraf Eberhard I of Worms. Many daughters of the regional nobility entered the convent, which in 1496 comprised 70 people, including 31 choir nuns. Through dowries and donations, the monastery acquired extensive property in the surrounding area. A notable historical event was the burial of King Adolf of Nassau in 1298, who rested in Rosenthal for eleven years before being transferred to Speyer. At the end of the 15th century, the monastery church was rebuilt in the late Gothic style. During the Palatine Peasants' War in 1525, the monastery was plundered and devastated but was able to continue its operations. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1572 under Abbess Elisabeth von Geispitzheim, and its rights passed to Count Philipp IV of Nassau-Weilburg.

Kloster Rosenthal is located in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an approximate altitude of 298 meters above sea level.

Today, the complex is a monastery ruin surrounded by a pond and a restaurant. After secularization, the former monastery buildings were partially converted for residential use, and the church temporarily served as a quarry.
