Kloster Ringelheim

Ringelheim Monastery, a former ecclesiastical institution, is located in Salzgitter, a city in Lower Saxony, Germany. Originally founded in the 10th century as a women's collegiate church, it underwent significant changes throughout its history.
History+
The foundation of Ringelheim Monastery as a women's collegiate church is dated to the year 941. It was established by Immad, a descendant of the Saxon Duke Widukind from the Immedinger family, and dedicated to Saints Abdon and Sennen. Imhilde, the founder's daughter, was installed as the first abbess. As a free imperial abbey, the collegiate church was directly subject to King Otto I and, in spiritual matters, to the Pope. The original foundation charter, issued by Otto I, is only preserved in later copies. In 1153, the women's collegiate church was converted into a Benedictine abbey. This existed until its secularization in 1803, after which the property passed into private ownership and was converted into a castle in 1817.
