Riedern Abbey

In the royal charter, which is now preserved in the State Archives of Frauenfeld, King Conrad III confirmed on January 7, 1152, that a cell in Tiezelenheim, today's Detzeln, had been founded by a nobleman and free man named Marcward. The brothers were to live according to the Rule of Saint Augustine. The Lords of Krenkingen were appointed as protectors. The hermitage was probably located near today's Klausenhof. From 1166 onwards, the hermitage was no longer mentioned, but the former site remained in the possession of the monastery until its dissolution.

In 1214, Riedern was mentioned for the first time in a document by Pope Innocent III. In 1639, the right of Vogtship passed from the Lupfen to the Pappenheim. These were followed by the Princes of Fürstenberg. On July 16, 1740, around 1 p.m., the monastery burned down. Afterwards, reconstruction took place with the help of the Augustinian Canons Regular Monastery of Kreuzlingen, under Abbot Johann Baptist Dannegger, which from then on also had legal authority. On June 30, 1749, the newly built buildings were consecrated by the Auxiliary Bishop of Constance and Titular Bishop of Domitiopolis, Count Franz Carl Joseph Fugger.

The Provostry of St. Leodegar was in Swiss hands through the monastery in Kreuzlingen and therefore could not be dissolved in 1803, but in 1812 it was decided to sell it to private individuals. The convent building and the church have recently been renovated again.

Before the middle of the 13th century, there was also a small Augustinian Canonesses monastery, called the Lower Provostry, newly built in 1670, which was dissolved in 1803. Only the former guesthouse still exists today. (Private property)
