Kloster Rechentshofen

Württembergian domain

Rechentshofen Monastery, also known as Marienkron, was a historic Cistercian nunnery in Baden-Württemberg. The complex is located southeast of Hohenhaslach, which is now a district of Sachsenheim in the Ludwigsburg district. It was notable for its establishment as a women's monastery within the originally male-dominated Cistercian Order.

History+

The foundation of Rechentshofen Monastery took place around 1240 by the noble Belrein von Eselsberg and his wife Agnes von Bilversheim. They endowed the monastery with lands and tithes in Rechentshofen, Auenbühl, and the Hartwald. Belrein's daughter Berchtrad became the first abbess. Initially not directly part of the Cistercian Order as a women's monastery, it was formally admitted in 1267 and consecrated to the Virgin Mary. Initially, the monastery buildings were made of wood, but from 1288 onwards, they were replaced by solid stone structures. The monastery served as a burial site for the founding family and later also for the Counts of Vaihingen. The community never comprised more than 20 nuns. In the course of the Reformation in Württemberg, monastic life ended in 1564. From 1648, the former monastery became a Württemberg domain.
