Ramsen Monastery

The Monastery of Ramsen was founded in 1146 as a Benedictine community under the patronage of Saints Mary and George. Originally established as a priory of the Monastery of St. Georgen in the Black Forest, it was transferred to the Bishop of Worms in 1174 due to its spatial distance and economic circumstances. In 1267, the monastery joined the Cistercian Order. Despite extensive landholdings, its economic situation deteriorated in the late Middle Ages, leading to the dissolution of the nunnery in 1477. Subsequently, a Cistercian priory was established, but it only existed until 1485/1490. The monastic properties were then incorporated into the mensa of the Prince-Bishopric of Worms.

The former Monastery of Ramsen is situated in the present-day municipality of Ramsen in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its geographical elevation is approximately 249 meters above sea level.

Today, only a few traces of the former monastic buildings of Ramsen remain. The site is designated as a cultural monument in Germany.
