Ramsau Monastery

Shared living for people with intellectual disabilities

The former Ramsau bei Haag Monastery, a historic complex in the Mühldorf am Inn region of Bavaria, has a long and eventful history. Originally an Augustinian Hermits monastery, it bears witness to the religious and political developments of the Bavarian landscape.

History+

The monastery was founded in 1412 by Jörg von Fraunberg, then lord of the Haag dominion. It was dedicated to Saints Mary, Augustine, and George. During the Reformation under Count Ladislaus von Fraunberg, the Augustinians abandoned the monastery. It was only after Haag passed to the Bavarian Wittelsbachs in 1567 that the monastery was re-established. From 1593, two friars took over pastoral care in Ramsau. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 as part of the secularization. The buildings initially became private property before Franciscan Sisters established an orphanage there in 1899. Since 1996, the former monastery buildings have housed shared living communities for people with intellectual disabilities.
