Pupping Monastery

The origins of the site date back to 866, when a chapel dedicated to Saint Othmar was built. This chapel became the place where Saint Wolfgang died in 994, and his heart and intestines were interred there, leading to a later change in patronage. The Franciscan monastery itself was founded in 1477 by the Counts of Schaunberg, who also brought the order to Pupping. A new church, replacing the older Wolfgang chapel, was consecrated in 1490. During the Reformation, the Franciscans were forced to leave the monastery, but they returned in 1621 and rebuilt the complex. In 1786, the convent was dissolved as part of the Josephine reforms, and the buildings were demolished in 1801. A new foundation was established in 1879, when Franciscans once again settled in Pupping. After a period as a novitiate until 1961 and the establishment of a Poor Clares monastery from 1968 to 1998, the monastery now serves as the Shalomkloster of the Franciscans.

Pupping Monastery is situated in the municipality of Pupping in the Eferding district of Upper Austria, Austria. It is located at an elevation of approximately 279 meters above sea level.

Today, Pupping Monastery, as Shalomkloster, offers men, women, and married couples the opportunity to participate in monastic life. The former monastery church now functions as a filial church dedicated to Saint Wolfgang within the Hartkirchen parish cluster.
