Posa Abbey (Zeitz)

The former Benedictine monastery of Posa, also known as Bosau, is situated on the western outskirts of the city of Zeitz in the Burgenlandkreis, Saxony-Anhalt. It was built on the remains of the Slavic fortified settlement of Puonzowa and stands today as a testament to medieval history and architecture.
History+
The foundation of Posa Monastery dates back to 1114, when a wooden chapel was consecrated on September 8th. Construction of a stone monastery church began as early as 1115, led by Abbot Eckbert and monks from Hirsau. The high altar was dedicated to the Virgin Mary on September 8th, 1121, and the entire monastery, featuring seven altars, was completed by 1122. A re-consecration of the high altar was performed in September 1124 by Bishops Richwin of Zeitz-Naumburg and Arnold of Merseburg. The monastery, dedicated to Saints Mary, John the Baptist, and John the Evangelist, continued to exist until its dissolution in 1551.
