Abbaye de Pontigny

The Cistercian Abbey of Pontigny was founded in 1114 on what was formerly marshy land and quickly developed into an influential mother monastery under Abbot Hugo of Macon. A total of 43 daughter abbeys across Europe emerged from this foundation. The current church, built between 1140 and 1170, is characterized by its simple yet monumental architecture. A remarkable choir extension took place between 1185 and 1212, already incorporating Gothic buttresses. Throughout its history, the monastery served as a refuge for important figures such as Thomas Becket (1164–1166) and Stephen Langton (approx. 1207–1213), both Archbishops of Canterbury. Edmund Rich of Abingdon also found refuge here in 1240 and was later buried in the monastery. During the French Revolution, the abbey was dissolved and partially destroyed. In the early 20th century, Paul Desjardins acquired the estate and hosted the “Décades de Pontigny” there, intellectual gatherings attended by luminaries such as Thomas Mann and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. In addition to its religious significance, the monastery also played a crucial role in viticulture, establishing one of the region's first vineyards and introducing the Chardonnay grape to Chablis.

Pontigny Abbey is situated at approximately 116 m above sea level in the commune of Pontigny, in the Yonne department, in the Bourgogne region of France.

Today, the impressive church of the former monastery is accessible to visitors and can be explored. It is an important stop on one of the routes of the Way of St. James.
