Paring Abbey

The origins of Kloster Paring date back to 1139, when the construction of the church and monastic buildings began. A joint endowment by Counts Gebhard, Heinrich, and Konrad von Rottenburg-Roning, along with their mother Mathilde, facilitated its foundation. In 1141, the church was consecrated to Saint Michael, and the first canons commenced monastic life there. Pope Lucius II confirmed the foundation in 1144. Following a devastating fire in the 14th century, the monastery was rebuilt under Prior Friedrich von Lobsing. In the 16th century, economic difficulties and a dwindling number of canons led to the cessation of canonical life in Paring around 1551. From 1598, Benedictines from Andechs took over the priory, operating it as an agricultural estate. During the Thirty Years' War, Paring suffered severe destruction, with only the central nave of the original three-aisled Romanesque basilica remaining. Between 1764 and 1769, under Abbot Meinrad I. Moosmüller, the church acquired its current late-Rococo appearance. The Benedictine establishment was dissolved during the secularization of 1803. It was not until 1974 that canonical life was re-established in Paring by the Windesheim Congregation, which founded a new convent here. Since 1992, Paring has been an autonomous priory.

Kloster Paring is located in the market town of Langquaid, within the district of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany. It is situated at an elevation of approximately 396 meters above sea level.

Today, Kloster Paring is an active priory of the Augustinian Canons of the Windesheim Congregation. The community consists of several canons, including priests who are involved in the pastoral care of the surrounding parishes. The monastery buildings were expanded in 2000/2001 and 2018.
