Kloster Orphal

The Orphal Monastery, once a significant spiritual institution, was located near present-day Erfurt in Thuringia. It exemplifies the turbulent history of religious sites in Central Germany and bears witness to a long-past era of monastic life.
History+
The first documented mention of Orphal Monastery occurred in 1074 in a charter from Hasungen Monastery, likely dedicated to Saint George as its patron saint. Its foundation is attributed to the brothers Eberhard and Kuno von Trier. Following the last written record of the locality Orphal in 1307, the Archbishop of Mainz attempted to preserve the monastery by transferring its patronage rights to the prosperous St. Peter's Monastery in Erfurt. Despite these efforts and a rededication of the church in 1479, also managed by St. Peter's Monastery, the Reformation around 1530 led to the final abandonment of the former Orphal Monastery's chapel.
Location+
The former Orphal Monastery was situated in the Orphaler Grund, a depression near the Weißbach stream, within the area of the present-day city of Erfurt in Thuringia. Its location is referred to as "Orphaler Kirche" in old cadastral maps. The surrounding area is characterized by elevations such as Orphaler Berg and Katzenberg. The site's elevation is approximately 291 m above sea level.
On site+
Today, only sparse remnants of the Orphal Monastery's walls can be found in the Orphaler Grund. A nearby mill with a restaurant displays images depicting the monastery, though these were created long after its decline. A small stream originating from the monastery well also serves as a reminder of the site's historical significance.
