Kloster Oberweimar

The former Oberweimar Monastery, once a significant spiritual hub, is located in the city of Weimar in the federal state of Thuringia, Germany. It served for centuries as a nunnery and is still represented today by its historic church and former monastery granary, which bear witness to its long history.

History+

In 1244, the Monastery of St. Peter and Paul was founded by Count Hermann II of Orlamünde. Originally conceived as a Cistercian nunnery, it served as a burial place for the founder's family and to accommodate female family members. In the 15th century, the convent aligned itself with the St. Peter's Monastery in Erfurt, which belonged to the Bursfelde Congregation, and was finally admitted into the Benedictine Order in 1500. The monastery was dissolved in 1525. The second monastery church of St. Peter and Paul, completed in 1361, still stands on site, as does the former monastery granary. The local Protestant parish is a member of the Community of Protestant Cistercian Heirs in Germany. Notable figures such as the mystic Lukardis of Oberweimar around 1300 and the nun Florentina of Oberweimar, known through Martin Luther in the 16th century, were associated with the monastery.
