Kloster Nonnenwerth

The origins of the monastery date back to the early 12th century, when Benedictine nuns established a community here. The complex, grouped around a monastery church with a striking west tower, was probably built around 1112 or 1122. The foundation was promoted by Archbishop Friedrich I of Schwarzenburg of Cologne to address the lack of women's convents in the archdiocese. In 1854, Franciscan nuns took over the monastery and established an educational institution for girls, which later developed into a grammar school. In 2020, the island and the school were privatized. The monastery closed in 2021 and the school in 2022.

Nonnenwerth Monastery is situated on an elongated island in the Rhine, stretching between Rolandswerth and Bad Honnef. The main part of the island, with the former monastery and school facilities, is located in the Ahrweiler district in Rhineland-Palatinate, near the town of Remagen. A small northern part belongs to North Rhine-Westphalia.

The former monastery complex is now a cultural monument in Rhineland-Palatinate. Following the closure of the monastery in 2021 and the school in 2022, the future use of the historic buildings remains to be determined.
