Kloster Niederviehbach, a historic building in the Bavarian district of Dingolfing-Landau, has a rich and varied history. Originally an Augustinian Hermitesses' monastery, it is now run by Dominican Sisters and houses a girls' secondary school.

History+

The monastery of Niederviehbach was founded in 1296 by Count Berengar von Leonsberg. It was dedicated to Mary and Augustine and at times also served as a residence for a male order. After the turn of the 14th century, the monastery and parish church were built. Between 1670 and 1690, the facilities were extensively renovated and expanded, with additional altars added in the 17th and 18th centuries. A miraculous image in the high altar dates back to the early construction phase of the 14th century, while a cenotaph of the founder has been located in a side chapel since 1587. The main building was newly constructed between 1731 and 1733 according to plans by Johann Michael Fischer and further extended in 1785. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 as part of the secularization in Bavaria. Valuable assets, archives, and books were transferred to Munich, while the remaining property and buildings were sold. The monastery pharmacy remained. In 1847, Dominican Sisters took over the complex and established a girls' boarding school, which continues today as St. Maria Realschule.
