Niedermunster Abbey

The origins of Niedermünster Abbey date back to the early 7th century. Initially founded as a hospice for the sick between 700 and 710 by Saint Odilia at the foot of Odilienberg, it was expanded into a monastery a few years later under the leadership of her niece, Saint Gundelinde. Until 1017, the abbey was dependent on its sister abbey Hohenburg (Odilienberg), but gained independence in that year through the free election of the abbess and a Vogt. In the 14th century, the monastery's importance declined. After a fire in 1542, which destroyed the church and the abbey building, no reconstruction took place, leading to the dissolution of the monastery. Among the abbesses of the monastery was Margareta Senn von Münsingen, who died in 1379.

Niedermünster Abbey is located in Bas-Rhin, a region in Alsace, France. The historical site lies at an elevation of approximately 514 meters above sea level.

Today, only the ruins of the monastery church remain of the former monastic complex. This church, built between 1160 and 1180, was a three-aisled, groin-vaulted basilica with a transept and a rectangular choir including a crypt. A double-towered facade with a narthex and gallery formed the western end. A few hundred meters down the valley lies the Romanesque Saint-Nicolas Chapel, rebuilt in the 19th century.
