The former Carmelite Monastery of Neustadt am Kulm, once a significant religious center, is located in the Upper Palatinate town of Neustadt am Kulm. Its history is closely intertwined with the region's development and bears witness to the religious and political upheavals of past centuries.
History+
The monastery, dedicated to Saint Erhard, was founded in 1413 by Burgrave Johann III of Nuremberg. It was constructed along the southern city wall of Neustadt am Kulm, following the necessary permission granted by Pope John XXII. An initial endowment of possessions secured the monastery's existence. The associated monastery church was built as early as 1416, complemented by an administrative building. With the introduction of the Reformation and Neustadt am Kulm's transition to the Evangelical-Lutheran faith, the Carmelite presence concluded. The monastery buildings were destroyed by fire in 1531. In 1633, the former convent building and the church were again affected by fires. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Protestant parish church was established within the preserved late Gothic parts of the former monastery church.
