Kloster Neuendorf

The monastery was founded in 1228, with its first documented mention as Kloster Niendorp in 1232 within a donation charter from John I, Margrave of Brandenburg. Thanks to numerous further donations from the local nobility, the monastery gained considerable influence, owning a total of 33 villages and revenues from 17 others by around 1500. Approximately 60 nuns from the most esteemed families of the Altmark resided here, dedicating themselves to the care of the sick and poor, the evangelization of the Elbe Slavs, as well as agriculture and herb cultivation. In 1289, a branch was established in Heiligengrabe in the Prignitz. During the 14th and 15th centuries, the monastery church served as a burial site for the noble family of Alvensleben, as evidenced by the oldest gravestones within the church. Following a period of decline in the early 15th century and partial decay of the buildings, extensive restoration was undertaken in the 1480s under Abbess Anna von der Schulenburg. The Reformation initially met with resistance from the nuns, but in 1579, the monastery was transformed into an Evangelical convent for noblewomen, after the church had already become an Evangelical parish church in 1555. The monastic estates were placed under state administration in 1544, converted into the Neuendorf administrative district, and sold in 1834. In 1810, the monastery was secularized.

The former monastery is situated in the village of Kloster Neuendorf within the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district, in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

The historic monastery church is currently used as the parish church for the Evangelical-Lutheran congregation of Kloster Neuendorf. Concerts are occasionally held there. The Baroque tower with its ogee dome characterizes the appearance of the single-nave brick hall church. Inside, the nuns' gallery, the Romanesque baptismal font, a Baroque pulpit, and the Adolf Reubke organ are particularly impressive. Of special note are the eight medieval stained-glass windows from the 14th and 15th centuries in the chancel, depicting scenes from the life of Jesus and once serving as a Biblia Pauperum. The church also houses several medieval gravestones and a silver, gilded communion chalice dating from 1403.
