Mühlberg Abbey

The foundation of Mühlberg Monastery, dedicated to Saint Mary, took place in 1228 through a donation from the brothers Otto and Bodo von Ileburg. Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious of Meissen confirmed the transformation of the local parish church into a monastic church and supported the monastery with endowments. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was secularized between 1539 and 1559. Since 2000, Claretian fathers have been working towards a revival of the former monastic life.

Mühlberg Monastery is situated in the town of Mühlberg/Elbe, located in the Elbe-Elster district of Brandenburg, Germany. The complex lies at an elevation of approximately 91 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church, a large single-nave brick building from the 13th century, was used as a parish church from 1565 after the dissolution of the monastery. Following a period of decay and abandonment in the 1960s, the monastery church underwent extensive restoration starting in 1992. The restoration of the refectory was also supported. Today, the church is an important architectural monument, whose roof turret had to be renewed after storm damage in 2010.
