Kloster Moosburg

Kastulus Minster

Moosburg Abbey, also known as St. Castulus Collegiate Church, is a significant historical complex in Moosburg an der Isar, Bavaria. Originally a Benedictine monastery, it evolved into a collegiate church and shaped the region for centuries.

History+

The Benedictine monastery was founded in the 750s, likely by a local noble family. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Castulus. Between 764 and 772, the relics of Saint Castulus were transferred from Rome to Moosburg. The monastery played a crucial role in the evangelization of the surrounding Holzland and Hallertau regions and maintained a respected monastic school. Following the overthrow of Duke Tassilo III in 788, the monastery came under Frankish control. In 895, it was granted as a proprietary monastery to Bishop Waldo of Freising. In 1027, Bishop Egilbert transformed the institution into a collegiate church. The patronage over the collegiate church was held by the Counts of Moosburg from 1169 and, after their extinction in 1284, passed to the Wittelsbachs. In 1598, the Moosburg collegiate church was relocated to Landshut by order of Duke Wilhelm V. From 1699 to 1802, the buildings housed a Capuchin hospice.

Location+

The former Moosburg Abbey is situated in the town of Moosburg an der Isar, within the Freising district of Bavaria, Germany.

On site+

None of the original Benedictine monastery buildings remain today. The current St. Castulus Minster, a three-aisled brick basilica, was constructed starting in 1170 and rebuilt after a fire in 1207. The relics of Saint Castulus, rediscovered in the early 16th century, rest in an altar created by Hans Leinberger between 1511 and 1514.
