Michelsberg Abbey

The foundation of St. Michael's Monastery took place in 1015 by Bishop Eberhard of Bamberg, shortly after the establishment of the diocese. Initially conceived as an episcopal proprietary monastery, it was directly subordinate to the Bishop of Bamberg. Monks from Amorbach and Fulda invigorated the new abbey. The monastery experienced its first golden age in the 12th century under Bishop Otto, whose canonization in 1189 further enhanced the site's significance. From the mid-13th century, Michelsberg Abbey gained increasing independence from the episcopal see. In the 15th century, monastic life was temporarily reformed by the Kastl Reform. Throughout its history, the monastery was involved in several conflicts, including the plundering in 1435 by the Bamberg citizenry, damage during the Peasants' War of 1525, and occupation during the Thirty Years' War. The Benedictine abbey experienced a renewed period of prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries before its dissolution in 1803 as part of the secularization. The extensive monastery library was transferred to what is now the Bamberg State Library.

Following the dissolution of the monastery in 1803, the premises were used for the United Katharinen- und Elisabethen-Spital, which continues to serve as a retirement home today. The former abbey church of St. Michael is now a filial church of the Cathedral Parish and houses tombstones of Bamberg bishops from the 16th to 18th centuries. After extensive renovation work, the church reopened to visitors in April 2026.
