Kloster Mehringen

The Mehringen Monastery was founded in 1225. It was established as a convent for Cistercian nuns and was dedicated to Saint Mary, and later also to Saint Peter. The endowment by Oda von Mehringen had already taken place in 1222. In 1232, Pope Gregory IX placed the monastery under the authority of Sittichenbach Abbey. The original monastic buildings displayed Romanesque characteristics, while later additions, particularly the monastery church, were built in the Gothic style. Besides the church, the cloister area included living and working quarters for the nuns, as well as a school. Outside this core area were, among other things, the provost's residence, a hospital, a library, a pharmacy, guest houses, and agricultural buildings. The monastery significantly contributed to the development of crafts and agriculture, which helped the village of Mehringen achieve prosperity. In 1525, the monastery was dissolved during the Peasants' War.

Mehringen Monastery is situated in the Mehringen district of Aschersleben in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. The complex is located at an elevation of approximately 109 meters above sea level.

After its dissolution, the former monastery buildings initially served as an estate and, after World War II, as the premises of an agricultural production cooperative (LPG). Today, the former monastery church, two residential buildings, and a barn are preserved. Two other buildings are in a severely dilapidated state.
