Marienrode Priory

The foundation of Marienrode Monastery dates back to 1125. Initially established as an Augustinian monastery, it later transformed into a Cistercian monastery. This transition occurred in 1259 when the Cistercians took over the site and gave it the name Marienrode, dedicated to Saint Mary and Archangel Michael. Over the centuries, the monastery underwent various construction phases, including a comprehensive renovation of the convent buildings in a simple Baroque style between 1717 and 1729. Secularization ended its monastic use in 1806. After a period of secular ownership, the monastery was re-established by Benedictine nuns in 1988 and is now part of the Beuron Congregation.

Marienrode Monastery is situated in the village of Marienrode, which is part of Hildesheim in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located at an elevation of approximately 133 meters above sea level.

Today, Marienrode Monastery functions as an active Benedictine nunnery. The historic Catholic parish church of St. Michael is the central feature of the complex. Additionally, there is a smaller Protestant parish church of St. Cosmas and Damian.
