The former Cistercian convent of Marienkammer, once located in Glaucha near Halle an der Saale, represents a significant testament to medieval sacred architecture and monastic life in Saxony-Anhalt. Although only a few relics of the original complex remain, the history of the convent bears witness to a long and eventful development in the heart of Germany.
History+
The origins of the convent date back to 1180, when Archbishop Wichmann von Seeburg founded the St. Georg nunnery in Glaucha. In 1220, under Archbishop Albrecht von Magdeburg, the community underwent a crucial transformation and became Cistercian, subsequently falling under the supervision of Zinna Abbey. During this period, the convent changed its name to St. Marien or Marienkammer. The St. Georgen church was declared the convent church in 1231. The monastic era concluded in 1557 with the dissolution of the convent. Of the original convent buildings, only the altar has survived; the current church at Glauchaer Straße 77 was built in 1744.
