Kloster Marienhaus

The monastery's history began in 1863 with the founding of the order by Margaretha Rosa Flesch. Even before this, she cared for the needy as a herbalist and helper. In 1857, she acquired land on the Kapellenberg, where in 1861 she began building a residence and nursing station, which was occupied in the same year. After the order's founding, the community grew rapidly, and under the leadership of Mother Rosa, numerous branches were established by 1878. Due to internal disagreements, she was not re-elected and lived as a simple sister until her death. Under her successor, Superior General Agatha Simons, the monastery complex largely acquired its current appearance. Between 1886 and 1887, the neo-Gothic motherhouse church was built, and the original Marienhaus, which had become too small, was replaced by a new building. In 1891, the Antoniushaus was completed as a psychiatric hospital, which later moved to a new building. The original wing now serves as an academy. In 2003, the Franciscans transformed the outdoor area into a publicly accessible Creation Path.

The Marienhaus Monastery is located in Neuwied, a town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It stands on an elevation of approximately 229 meters above sea level, east of the Wied and opposite the main village of Hausen.

Today, Marienhaus Monastery houses the Marienhaus Klinikum St. Antonius Waldbreitbach, a psychiatric hospital, and the Rosa Flesch – Conference Center. The latter uses the former Antonius Chapel as a forum and concert hall and offers various courses and discussion groups. The publicly accessible Creation Path, with its biotopes, orchards, and gardens, invites visitors to explore. A café-restaurant, a monastery shop, and a bookstore complement the offerings for visitors.
