Marienberg Abbey

The foundation of Kloster Marienberg occurred between 1176 and 1181 as a convent for Augustinian canonesses. It was established as a direct successor to Kloster Mariental. In 1199, the convent remained unharmed during the destruction of Helmstedt. Around 1230, the number of canonesses, lay sisters, and priests was set, and the convent was supported by donations. Between 1230 and 1250, nuns were transferred to Marienborn when a hospital there was converted into a convent. A legend tells of Mary's protection of the convent during the siege of Helmstedt in 1279. In the 15th century, a monastic reform, following the rules of Windesheim, was implemented, which, among other things, reinstated the prohibition of private property and the observance of enclosure. After persistent resistance from the nuns, the Reformation was finally introduced in 1568/69 by Duke Julius of Brunswick and Lüneburg. The convent was transformed into an evangelical women's foundation, whose assets remained as special property and are now managed by the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz. Since 1754, the von Veltheim family has held the right to the office of Domina. Under Domina Charlotte von Veltheim (1832–1911), the convent experienced a new period of prosperity starting in 1862 and was rebuilt on its original foundations. In 1876, an infirmary was established in the west wing, forming the origin of today's Helios St. Marienberg Klinik Helmstedt. From 1872 to 1940, the convent housed a private secondary school for girls, and from 1882 to 1922, a nursery school, both founded by Domina Charlotte von Veltheim. The girls' school had to close in 1940 due to a National Socialist decree. An evangelical convent was resident in Kloster Marienberg from 1862 to 1984 and again from 1989 to 2024.

Kloster Marienberg is located in the district town of Helmstedt in Lower Saxony, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 131 meters above sea level.

Kloster Marienberg is currently owned by the Stiftung Braunschweigischer Kulturbesitz. A part of the buildings houses the Helios St. Marienberg Klinik Helmstedt, which originated from an infirmary established in 1876.
