Kloster Maria Hamicolt

The origins of Maria Hamicolt Monastery date back to 1856, when Redemptorists settled on a farm near Rorup, which had been bequeathed to the Diocese of Münster. However, this first monastic settlement was dissolved in 1873 during the Kulturkampf. After its conclusion, a new foundation was established in 1891 by German Benedictine nuns of the Most Holy Sacrament, who relocated from Oldenzaal in the Netherlands. From 1895, the nuns established a host bakery and also operated a paraments embroidery. From Maria Hamicolt, further monasteries were revived or founded, including Vinnenberg Monastery in 1898 and Varensell Abbey in 1902. The Benedictine nuns left the monastery in 2008. Subsequently, it was used by the Community of the New Way of St. Francis until 2022, which continued to operate the guesthouse and later handed over the host bakery to a private operator. In 2022, the Diocese of Münster terminated the usage agreement and plans to sell the property, which has temporarily housed Ukrainian refugees.

Maria Hamicolt Monastery is situated in the city of Coesfeld in the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

The former monastery currently serves as accommodation for Ukrainian refugees, while the Diocese of Münster prepares for the sale of the property.
