Kloster Maria Eck
Kloster Maria Eck, a significant Franciscan-Minorite monastery, is situated in the picturesque region of Traunstein in Bavaria, Germany. It is a well-known pilgrimage destination, distinguished by its historical importance and its idyllic location in the Bavarian Alps.
History+
The monastery's origins trace back to the 17th century, when a priory of Benedictine monks from Seeon Abbey existed on this site. However, this was dissolved during secularization. The current monastery complex was founded in 1819. Since 1891, Maria Eck has been home to the Franciscan-Minorites, who also maintain the initial stages of training for their order, the postulancy and novitiate, here. The pilgrimage tradition to Maria Eck began as early as the 16th century and saw a significant increase during the Thirty Years' War. Legend has it that light phenomena inspired woodcutters to build a chapel, which was later expanded into a larger church. In 1803, the pilgrimage church of Maria Eck was secularized, and most of its furnishings were sold or destroyed. It was not until 1813 that Crown Prince Ludwig allowed the church to reopen and the miraculous image to be returned. In 1936, during the Nazi regime, the church was temporarily closed, and two of its bells were melted down.
