Maihingen Abbey

The monastery of Maihingen was founded in 1445. Initially, it was assigned to the Bridgettine Order. In 1525, during the Peasants' War, the monastery suffered looting and partial destruction, which is documented in the records of the then prioress Walpurgis Scheffler. From 1607 until its secularization in 1802, it was a convent of the Minorites (Conventual Franciscans). Following the dissolution of the monastery as part of the secularization, it was transferred to the House of Oettingen-Wallerstein, which, however, allowed the Minorites to remain. A special attraction is the Baumeister organ from 1737, which was restored between 1987 and 1991 after 185 years of silence and is now considered one of the best-preserved German Baroque organs.

Maihingen Monastery is situated in the Donau-Ries region of Bavaria, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 427 meters above sea level.

Today, the former monastery buildings house the Catholic Evangelization Center Maihingen (KEM), which was renamed Kloster Maihingen in 2013 and is supported by the Lumen Christi e. V. community. The Museum KulturLand Ries is also located in the buildings of the former monastic economy.
