History+

The origins of Maglizh Monastery date back a long way, with evidence suggesting a connection to the Second Bulgarian Empire. A preserved censer with a Greek inscription from 1233 AD, during the reign of Tsar Ivan Asen II, testifies to this early period. In the 14th century, after the Ottoman conquest, the monastery experienced repeated looting and destruction, but was always rebuilt. The current church building, a single-nave structure without a dome and with an apse, was constructed from 1834. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, the monastery was again burned down but quickly rebuilt by the local population. It also served as a refuge for revolutionaries of the liberation movement, including Vasil Levski. Since 1922, it has been a nunnery.
