Kloster Lohhof (Mindelheim)

The Lohhof, first mentioned in 1445, came into the possession of Christoph Fugger in 1616 and initially served as a stud farm. After being transferred to Bavarian Duke Maximilian Philipp in 1699, the estate was gifted to the English Ladies in Mindelheim in 1706, before passing into private ownership in 1814. Due to the growing need for orphan care and girls' education, as well as an increasing number of applicants for monastic life, the convent leadership acquired the Lohhof in 1902. Between 1903 and 1907, under the direction of Prioress M. Ludwiga Nickl and designed by Munich architect Hans Schurr, a new complex comprising a convent, a church, and an orphanage was built. The design followed the Neo-Romanesque style, complemented by numerous Art Nouveau elements in the interior. From 1939 to 1944, the Lohhof served as accommodation for war refugees, then as a military hospital until 1945, and from 1945 to 2001 as a retirement home. After the Dominicans moved out in 2001, Augsburger Lehmbau e. V. took over the complex in 2006.

Kloster Lohhof is located in the Lohhof district of the town of Mindelheim in the Bavarian Unterallgäu. It is situated directly on Federal Highway 16.

Since 2007, the east wing of the monastery building has housed a rehabilitation facility of Kompass Drogenhilfe. There, 25 women and men receive care for an average of six months. In the west wing, another support service for multiply impaired drug-addicted individuals has been under development since 2012.
