Loccum Abbey
Loccum Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in Rehburg-Loccum, Lower Saxony, stands as a remarkably well-preserved example of monastic architecture north of the Alps. Today, it functions as an important ecclesiastical center and cultural attraction.
History+
The foundation of Loccum Abbey dates back to 1163, established as a daughter house of Volkenroda through a donation by Count Wilbrand von Hallermund. The Cistercian monks who settled here dedicated the monastery to Saint Mary, Saint George, and additionally to Saint Petronella. Towards the end of the 16th century, the abbey adopted the Augsburg Confession and has continued to exist as an independent spiritual entity within the Evangelical-Lutheran Church of Hanover since its inception.

Loccum Abbey is situated in the town of Rehburg-Loccum, part of the Nienburg district in Lower Saxony, Germany. It lies at an elevation of approximately 53 meters above sea level, close to Lake Steinhude.
