The Loc-Dieu Abbey, a former sacred building of the Cistercian order, is located in the commune of Martiel in the French department of Aveyron. It is distinguished by its rich history and impressive architecture, which combines Romanesque and Gothic influences.
History+
The foundation of Loc-Dieu Abbey took place around 1123 according to the Benedictine Rule. In 1162, it joined the Cistercian order. Construction of the convent buildings began first, but the abbey church was only started in 1159. Financial difficulties and the Albigensian Crusades delayed the work, but the church was consecrated in 1189. During the Hundred Years' War, the monastery was plundered and set on fire in 1411, though the church remained undamaged. Between 1430 and 1470, the cloister, chapter house, and convent buildings were rebuilt, and the abbey was fortified. By the 18th century, the number of monks had significantly decreased. After its dissolution during the French Revolution, the monastery was sold and extensively restored and redesigned by the Cibiel family starting in 1840.
