Lobenfeld Abbey

The foundation of Lobenfeld Monastery by Augustinian Canons took place around the year 1139. It was established on a former manor, which passed from the Staufer to Meginlach von Obrigheim, who then donated it to Bishop Burchard II of Worms for the purpose of founding a monastery. The canons from Frankenthal undertook the construction on behalf of the Diocese of Worms. Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa confirmed the monastery's possessions in a document between 1181 and 1187, which also mentions earlier dispositions by King Conrad III and Duke Frederick II of Swabia, indicating a foundation before 1147. The monastery received various endowments in the 12th century, including two marks in 1167, when it was first mentioned in a document. In 1173, it acquired further land from Abbot Sigehard of Lorsch. The Romanesque eastern part of the monastery church, consisting of the transept and choir, is dated to around 1170/80 and shows architectural parallels to Worms Cathedral. Originally led by a provost, the monastery transformed into a convent of nuns in the 13th century, led by a magistra, while the overall supervision remained with Frankenthal or the provost of Höningen. In the course of the Reformation, Lobenfeld Monastery was dissolved in 1560.

The monastery is situated in Lobenfeld, a district of the municipality of Lobbach, in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis in Baden-Württemberg. It lies at an elevation of approximately 175 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church is now an important Staufer monument. The original monastery buildings were located to the south of the church, and a burial ground was to the north.
