Lindow Abbey

The founding of Kloster Lindow is believed to have occurred around 1230 in the Temnitz area on Lake Katerbowsee. Initially possibly belonging to the Premonstratensian order, it was relocated to Lindow around 1240, likely at the behest of the Counts of Ruppin, who were expanding their territory. By this time, it was probably already a Cistercian nunnery. The first documented mention dates to 1334. Construction of the monastic church and convent buildings likely began in the mid-13th century and was completed by the mid-14th century. Later additions in the 15th century included a monastic barn and a monastic school. As the house monastery of the Counts of Arnstein, the lords of Ruppin, it was richly endowed with land and income, making it one of the wealthiest monasteries in northern Brandenburg. Following the death of the last Count of Lindow-Ruppin in 1524, the monastery fell to the Margraviate of Brandenburg. In the course of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1542 and gradually transformed into an evangelical ladies' foundation. The electoral domain administration took over the monastic estate as the Amt Lindow. During the Thirty Years' War, large parts of the complex were destroyed in 1638. From 1696, it served as a "Hochadeliges Fräuleinstift" (High Noble Ladies' Foundation) for the provision of unmarried daughters of the Brandenburg nobility, but it experienced a decline. The foundation was dissolved in 1945.

The former monastery is located in the town of Lindow (Mark) in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district of Brandenburg, at an elevation of approximately 46 meters above sea level. It is situated on a peninsula northeast of Lindow's old town on Lake Wutzsee.

Today, only a few parts of the original medieval complex remain. The existing buildings primarily date from the 18th and early 19th centuries, a period when the monastery was used as an evangelical ladies' foundation. The entire ensemble of buildings bears witness to the monastery's former importance and structure.
