Lausnitz monastery

The monastery was founded in 1132 by the noble widow Cuniza. Initially, a small wooden church existed in the valley, which was replaced between 1155 and 1180 by a stone monastic building at the current site. The new monastery church, named Maria Stein, was consecrated on June 24, 1180. A fire devastated the church in 1212, leading to a renewed consecration only in 1217. With the introduction of the Reformation from 1525 onwards, the nuns gradually left, and with the death of the last two in 1543, the monastery's history concluded. The large monastery church subsequently fell into increasing disrepair. In 1617, the eastern part of the church was separated and used as a village church, while the western part was demolished between 1719 and 1722. A stylistically inappropriate tower added to the eastern remnant in 1792 was removed again in 1856. After a closure due to dilapidation in 1857, reconstruction began in 1863 according to plans by Ferdinand von Quast, concluding with its consecration in 1866. The building, which was placed under monument protection in 1966, now consists of an Old Romanesque eastern and a Neo-Romanesque western part. A triumphal cross from around 1235/40 is preserved inside.

Kloster Lausnitz is located in the municipality of Bad Klosterlausnitz in the Saale-Holzland district of Thuringia, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 312 meters above sea level.

The former monastery church now serves as a village church and is a protected cultural monument in Thuringia. It presents itself as a blend of Old Romanesque and Neo-Romanesque architectural elements, which are the result of extensive reconstruction in the 19th century.
