Langheim Abbey

Kloster Langheim, a former Cistercian abbey, is located in Lichtenfels, Bavaria, Germany. The remaining large-scale buildings bear witness to the former significance of this historic site.
History+
Kloster Langheim was founded in 1132. For 670 years, the Cistercian order shaped life and development in the region. The monastery was dedicated to Saints Mary, John the Evangelist, and Nicholas. A fire in 1802 damaged parts of the extensive building complex, including the large church. In the course of secularization, Kloster Langheim was dissolved in 1803. The no longer needed buildings were subsequently sold and demolished during the first quarter of the 19th century.
Location+
Kloster Langheim is situated in Klosterlangheim, a district of Lichtenfels in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. The complex lies at an elevation of approximately 302 meters above sea level in a valley basin traversed by the Leuchsenbach stream. For flood protection, the monks had constructed a tunnel system and retention basins outside the village, and created fish ponds on the upper course of the Leuchsenbach.

Today, parts of the former monastery complex that remain include the deconsecrated St. Catherine's Chapel from the 13th century, the Sepulchre Chapel from 1625, sections of the Baroque convent building, a small remnant of the Baroque abbey, the 18th-century farmstead, and other utility buildings. Since 1982, a local history museum has been housed in a part of the Baroque abbey, documenting the history of the monastery and the locality.
