Monastery Kölleda
Kölleda Monastery in Thuringia, once a Cistercian nunnery, is located in the town of Sömmerda. It represents a historically significant complex whose origins date back to the 13th century, and its church, in a modified form, remains preserved to this day.
History+
The foundation of Kölleda Monastery took place in 1265 by the Benedictine Abbey of Hersfeld. The Counts of Beichlingen endowed the nunnery, which was subsequently settled with Cistercian nuns from Frauensee Monastery. Although primarily known as a Cistercian nunnery, some historical sources also refer to it as Benedictine. In 1538, the convent still comprised 14 nuns, who, among other activities, taught girls handicraft. The monastery was dissolved in 1556, following the death of the last abbess, Sophia von Schafstädt.

The former Kölleda Monastery is situated in the town of Sömmerda in the federal state of Thuringia, Germany.

The original monastery church, dedicated to Saint John the Evangelist and later to Saint John the Baptist, still exists in a converted form today. It is located on the cemetery grounds on the street “Im Kloster” and houses the tomb monument of Countess Helene von Beichlingen.
