Kloster Kemnade

The foundation of Kloster Kemnade took place around 959 by Frederuna and Irma, daughters of Count Wichmann the Younger. Frederuna assumed the role of the first abbess. Through extensive inheritances, the monastery acquired considerable wealth and possessions in numerous surrounding villages. The high bailiffs of Corvey Abbey, originating from the Northeim family, exerted significant influence at times. In 1143, Heinrich was elected abbot of Corvey and his sister Judith as abbess of Kemnade. Following Judith's controversial tenure and her expulsion by the Pope and King Konrad III, the monastery was granted to the Benedictine Abbey of Corvey in 1147 and operated as a monastery for monks until 1168. After a 25-year period of vacancy, the monastery was dissolved in 1542. Despite a ruling by the Imperial Chamber Court in 1592, which returned Kemnade to Corvey, the possessions ultimately fell to Friedrich Ulrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, leading to long disputes over the rights.

Kloster Kemnade is situated in Holzminden, a town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is nestled within the river landscape of the Weser.

Of the original monastery complex, the Romanesque monastery church of St. Marien, consecrated in 1046, remains today. It is embedded in an ensemble of half-timbered houses and the remains of the village church of St. Dionysius. The church houses the family crypt of the "Baron of Lies," Münchhausen, as well as the sarcophagus of Count Siegfried von Homburg, who died in 1380. Another building, whose substance has been significantly altered, is now used as a residential house.
