Jakobsberg Priory

The origins of Jakobsberg date back to 1720, when a pilgrimage in honor of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was established. A small chapel with a hermitage formed the first sacred building. Between 1857 and 1862, the current chapel was built according to designs by Ignaz Opfermann and subsequently consecrated. The brothers Fritz, Pedro, and Heinz Muth decorated the interior from 1864 to 1869 with Nazarene paintings. The idea of settling a monastic community to care for the popular pilgrimage emerged in the 19th century. In 1921, the first monks, Trappists, moved in. Between 1922 and 1929, changes were made in the altar area of the chapel. During the National Socialist era, monastic life experienced impairments, and the Trappists left the community in 1949. From 1951 to 1960, the monastery housed the novitiate of the Jesuit Order. At the end of the 1960s, Missionary Benedictines from St. Ottilien acquired the buildings to accommodate fellow monks from African crisis regions. The chancel arch was clad in 1972 with colorful ceramic reliefs of the 14 Holy Helpers. A 4.5-meter-high Pantocrator glass mosaic by Peter Paul Etz and Gustel Stein was created in the apse in 1952/53. Between 1983 and 1990, new buildings were constructed and renovated. In February 2009, another renovation phase was completed, during which the red sandstone altar was repositioned. In early 2023, the Missionary Benedictines left Jakobsberg, which is now to be developed into the spiritual center of the Diocese of Mainz.

Jakobsberg Monastery is located in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, at an elevation of approximately 264 meters above sea level.

The former monastery now serves as an educational and cultural center for the Diocese of Mainz and the Benedictines. It is being developed into the spiritual center of the Diocese of Mainz.
